Effect of Electronic Media on Children Essay The media has demonstrated otentially profound effects, both positive and negative, on childrens cognitive, social, and behavioral development. Considering the increasing exposure of children to newer forms of media, we decided to review the current literature on the effects of media on child health both in the Western countries and India. It is widely accepted that media has profound influence on child health, including violence, obesity, tobacco and alcohol use, and risky sexual behaviors. Simultaneously, media may have some positive effects on child health. We need to find ways to optimize the role of edia in our society, taking advantage of their positive attributes and minimizing their negative ones. We need to understand better how to reverse the negative impact of media and make it more positive. Foreword Nuclear Energy has many proponents and much opposition. Many of the groups that oppose nuclear power have legitimate concerns, mainly with the dangers of nuclear material in relation with human health concerns and environmental troubles that are risked by allowing nuclear power plants to increase in number. Yet, many of these opposition groups have made outspoken and radical claims about the â€Å"hidden† motives of why nuclear power is promoted and subsidized by our federal government. For example, The Nuclear Information and Resource Service claim that the federal government has the intention of committing genocide against Native Americans because uranium mining is predominantly done on reservations. Another cry out by nuclear power opponents is the constant reliving of the few nuclear mishaps that occurred decades ago, at Chernobyl or Three Mile Island. No doubt, past accidents have happened worldwide and are important reminders to not play around with nuclear material, b ut technology has improved as well, a fact opponents fail to consider. Many of these organizations feel that other sources should be used to supply America’s energy needs. These types of statements tag many opponents to nuclear energy as misinformed, out of touch with scientific facts, or just closed minded to the whole concept of nuclear power. On the other hand, the proponents of nuclear energy like President Bush see it as cheap, and environmentally friendly. As a result, President Bush passed the Comprehensive Energy Bill in 2005 that would increase production of all types of energy, including nuclear, by giving subsidies and tax breaks to nuclear power producers. Edgar Allan Poe Research Paper Essay

Best known for his poems and short fiction. Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most famous American poets. He deserves most credit for short suspenseful mysteries and he perfected the area of horror stories. He wrote many famous poems like â€Å"The Raven† and â€Å"The Bells†. Poe was a genius and very meticulous in his stories every clue had to fit and that’s why he didn’t make a lot of short stories but a small collection of great short stories. He was born in Boston on January 19, 1809. Both of his parents were touring actors; both died before Poe even reached three years old. A rich merchant named Mr. Allan in Richmond, Virginia took Poe in. His childhood was uneventful although he attended the University of Virginia in 1826 for only a year. Even thought he was a good student he ran up a large gambling dept that Allan refused to pay. This prevented his return to the university and broke-off his engagement to Sarah Elmira Royster, his Richmond sweetheart. Having no way to support himself he enlisted in the army. He had already written and printed (at his own expense) his first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827). Allan secured Poe’s release from the army and his appointment to West Point but refused to give him money. After 6 months Poe apparently got kicked out of West Point for disobedience. His friends, however, gave money to him for the publication of Poems by Edgar A. Poe †¦Second Edition (1831), actually a third edition–after Tamerlane and Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems (1829). This book contained the famous â€Å"To Helen† and â€Å"Israfel,† poems that show the restraint and the calculated musical effects of language that was characterizing his poetry. Poe next lived in Baltimore with his widowed aunt, Maria Clemm, and her daughter, Virginia, and turned to fiction as a way to support himself. In 1832 the Philadelphia Saturday Courier published five of his stories all comic or satiric. In 1833, â€Å"MS. Found in a Bottle† won a $50 prize from the â€Å"Baltimore Saturday Visitor†. Poe, his aunt, and Virginia moved to Richmond in 1835 and he became editor of the Southern Literary Messenger and married Virginia, who was not even 14 years old. Poe wrote fiction, his most horrifying tale, â€Å"Berenice,† in the Southern Literary Messenger, but most of his contributions were serious and critical reviews that earned him respect as a critic. He praised the young Dickens and devoted most of his attention to devastating reviews of popular contemporary authors. His contributions increased the magazine’s circulation, but they offended its owner, who didn’t like Poe’s drinking. The January 1837 issue of the Southern Literary Messenger announced Poe’s that Poe will stop to be the editor but also included the first part of his long fiction tale, â€Å"The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym†, five of his reviews, and two of his poems. This was going to be the strange pattern for Poe’s career: success as an artist and editor but failure to satisfy his employers and to secure a quite, stable life. First in New York City (1837), then in Philadelphia (1838-44), and again in New York (1844-49), Poe tried to establish himself as a force in literary journalism, but with only slow success. He did succeed, however, in creating influential literary theories and in showing mastery of the forms he favored – musical poems and short fictional narratives. Both forms, he argued, should aim at â€Å"a certain unique or single effect.† His theory of short fiction is best exemplified in â€Å"Ligeia† (1838), the tale Poe considered his finest, and â€Å"The Fall Of The House Of Usher† (1839), which was to become one of his most famous stories. â€Å"The Murders in the Rue Morgue† (1841) is sometimes considered the first detective story. The â€Å"The Raven† (1845) and â€Å"The Bells† (1849) are good example of musical poems. Virginia’s death in January 1847 was a heavy blow, but Poe continued to write and lecture. In the summer of 1849 he revisited Richmond, lectured, and was proposed to the fiancee he had lost in 1826, she accepted that. After his return north he was found unconscious on a Baltimore street. In a brief obituary the Baltimore Clipper reported that Poe had died of â€Å"congestion of the brain.†

Philosophy and The Truman Show Essay The movie, The Truman Show is about a reality television show that has been created to document the life of a man who, adopted at birth by a television network, is tricked into believing that his life, his reality, is normal and the environment that he lives is real. It is set in a town called Seahaven, which is essentially a simulation of the real world similar enough to the outside world that the viewing audience can relate to it. The town is a television studio inside an enormous dome in which the weather, the sun, the sky, and all the actions of the citizens are directed by a team of special effects people. The entire show is directed and produced by the creator of the show, Christof. Truman Burbank, the star of the show, is the only one who doesnt know that he lives in a giant studio and is surrounded by an illusion of reality. The entire world watches Trumans movements twenty four hours a day, seven days a week through the use of thousands of miniature hidden cameras. The Truman Show closely parallels Platos Allegory of the Cave. Initially, Truman is trapped in his own cave; a film set or fictional island known as Seahaven. Trumans journey or ascension into the real world and into knowledge is similar to that of Platos cave dweller. Truman, much like the prisoners in the cave, would know no difference then what they have been taught or shown to be the real world their whole lives. If Truman was taught in geography class that there was only Seahaven and the rest of the world was water, then he would accept that as the truth. However, because of some of the situations he encounters and sees, and with his curiosity and logic, Truman is able to work out something isnt right about the world and manages to escape. Because it is a gradual realization, Truman doesnt go mad as his make believe world unravels around him. As might be the case with Platos cave dwellers, as they are stepping into the light of the real world. I think that a majority of people, as do I, would agree that there is something wrong with what was done to Truman. We would all tend to believe that it would be a sad existence for any person to be so fooled by his environment and be so oblivious to the truth for his whole life. However, Trumans situation is a metaphor for the current media climate that we live in today. The world has become something of a dome in which reality seems to be whatever we see and hear in the media. In an interview with the Christof character regarding the continued success of the show he said, We accept the reality of the world with which were presented. Its as simple as that.The world has become an audience waiting for reality to be presented in an hour long television program, or a two hour movie. The fake landscape Truman lives in is our own media landscape in which news, politics, and advertising are increasingly made up of theatrical illusions. The Truman Show addressed our fear of how far reality television could go, but also our fears about the consequences of media conglomerates amassing control, our growing dependence on media for reality, and ultimately our fear of the audience losing control of how far they will go. The Truman Show is also a critique of our fascination with reality TV. At one point, Christof says, Weve become bored watching actors give us phony emotionsWhile the world he inhabits is in some respects counterfeit, theres nothing fake about Truman himself. It isnt always Shakespeare, but its genuine. Its a life. Our fascination with authorized voyeurism in the form of reality television is articulated perfectly by Christof. The recent boom of reality TV programs is evidence of that, and it seems that the ethical boundaries are pushed with each new season. The audience is never blamed for its addiction to the show, the evil one is the creator. They buy into the manipulation of Truman just as people today purchase the photos of Princess Diane before and after her death. As there is with the complaints about contemporary media, the audience is not ultimately held responsible for watching. They eventually cheer for Truman as he makes his escape from Seahaven, and for a moment, it seems that the audience may realize that they themselves had created the show, and that they might repent and turn off the TV. But as the show ends, the two security guards pick up the remote control and casually look for another program not even questioning the ethics of what had happened. They have realized the evil, supported the rebellion, but then succumb all over again.
